Do I trust this computer?, my iPhone asks me for what has to be the thousandth time using the same computer logged into the same Apple ID. Enter your passcode, it demands once again, reflecting the hardware, software, and services working together in a way only Apple can deliver.

  • @nickheer@c.im You could have changed your mind and how would the phone know unless it constantly asked you instead of keeping a list that would need dreaded UI.

@nickheer@c.im Well, Nick, I know what you're thinking: But being this is an Apple silicon Macintosh, the most powerful personal computer in the world, and would blow your data clean off, you've got to ask yourself one question: 'Do I feel lucky?' Well, do ya, punk?

The sadder part is that it used to work sensibly ages ago. You only got asked once and it stuck more or less forever. But then someone at Apple decided that that's clearly not enough security, because you absolutely can never have enough according to some people, and in the typical Apple fashion implemented the current behavior without giving the users an opportunity to evaluate their own risks.

@nickheer@c.im Same with the Trust this Browser in Apple Developer account.

@nickheer@c.im I agree. But I think I’m still glad they do ask so often? Perhaps their stance on security is similar to Steve Jobs thoughts on privacy? https://daringfireball.net/linked/2020/12/18/steve-jobs-on-privacy

@nickheer@c.im @nikitonsky@mastodon.online This type of thing is fine for a first iteration, but what bugs me is that we live with these since 15 years now

  • @nickheer@c.im I thought I must be using outdated hardware or that I broke a configuration/setting somewhere because of how often this message appeared on my devices. This is *normal* behavior? It’s so user-hostile.

@nickheer@c.im the fix will be in the next OS: “Do you still trust this computer?” #functionalhighground

@nickheer@c.im yeah, but why are you plugging the phone into the computer at all? Sounds like you’re trying to use old iTunes Match or something, I mean I guess it technically still works, but surely you’d be happier with Apple Music and never plugging in again! /s
