Quad Trees is a masterpiece of algorithm to detect distances, game collisions, image compressions and to finding image countours (object recognition). Is it the best approach? Hell no! But it is really surprising how effective this can be! The first time I saw this, was on the Computer Vision book by Szeliski. As soon as I'm back from the trip, I'll take some time to write a blog post about how this works for object recognition.
