@robpike@hachyderm.io @ElleGray@mstdn.social But that's fair almost by definition, right? LLMs produce output that is statistically similar to the corpus of training material, presumably not far off the median level. Thus mediocre.

@timbray@cosocial.ca @robpike@hachyderm.io @ElleGray@mstdn.social It can memorize a lot of stuff which includes much more than the median or mean of humanity's creativity, both above and below average. So it can regurgitate and perhaps even combine multiple high-quality things. But it's not the same as human creativity nevertheless.

@timbray@cosocial.ca @ElleGray@mstdn.social Yes, and we all are being ordered to use this mediocrity to save time. But that does ring true in a world in which experts are the people who are defined to be wrong.

@timbray@cosocial.ca @robpike@hachyderm.io @ElleGray@mstdn.social it's so great for scut work, though. Here is the result of typing four sentences to Claude code: https://gist.github.com/sayrer/e976c9d73105751b9d60d3a049ebbf5e That would have been easy for me to write, but it would have taken at least half an hour, and I would page out important things.
