Over the years, people have asked how my distributed ethnographic case study actually works. Because the project involves collaborators across multiple countries and both online and in-person environments, I’ve written a short participation guide. What follows is an abridged explanation of the structure. A full operational manual also exists for readers who want more detail. PROJECT OVERVIEW This project is a distributed ethnographic study examining social dynamics, consent practices, digital culture, and the ways communities interact across online and offline spaces. Participation may occur through conversation, observation, collaboration, or simply by being present in social environments where the project takes place. Participation is voluntary. IDENTITY CONTEXT SIGNALS Some readers notice that I occasionally use different names in different contexts. These are context signals, not different individuals. They indicate which analytical framework is active at a given moment. Emily refers to the real-life version of me known by people who grew up with me. Leah represents the Christian-conservative framework used in some analyses. Leora represents the queer polyfeminist framework used in others. Megan usually means I’m attending an event or meetup in a research or professional capacity. Rosalin signals the technology layer of the project, often appearing as Cassie or Annalise when discussions revolve around technology ecosystems and tools. MEETUPS… (1/3)
