Just got done listening to @alexmonea give a book talk about The Digital Closet. It's a deep critique of the underlying technologies of content moderation used by #Google and #Meta. Such important work!

@alexmonea@aoir.social one of the major areas Alex considers is online sexuality: how do porn filters and content moderation decisions push queer sexuality into the digital closet. This conservatism is quite amenable to US-based surveillance capitalism -- advertisers don't want their ads next to depictions of sex. I asked him about #Bluesky -- he thinks the recent investments of venture capital indicate they will engage in the same sort of conservative content moderation that the mainstream platforms use.
