There was a kerfuffle on Bluesky yesterday because someone released a public dataset of Bluesky posts (with the intention that they could be used for e.g. AI training). I spent literally two hours this morning on a thread about public social media and research ethics, so figured I'd share here too. :) https://skywriter.blue/pages/cfiesler.bsky.social/post/3lbwurkbfcs2w

I also briefly mention there our replication of the twitter research ethics survey on Mastodon (with @bkeegan and co.). We’ve analyzed the data and are writing a paper, but I’ll try to prioritize getting a blog post about those findings out soon!

@cfiesler thanks for putting that together. (I have nothing useful to add, but I wanted there to be a reply that isn't from somebody being a giant douche.)

@cfiesler Policing public data only hurts small developers and open source projects, not the corporations. they've already locked down their services and have enough users feeding data.

@cfiesler This was an interesting read! I don’t have enough knowledge in this area to form any concrete opinions, so I appreciate the perspective.

@cfiesler "The Comsumer Manifesto" by Stuart Henshall published in "First Monday" in 2000 (https://firstmonday.org/ojs/index.php/fm/article/view/747/656) was a fascinating early study about who owned personal data on the Internet and what rights individuals should have. #personaldata #thecomsumermanifesto. Old but enlightening.
