Do we musical adhd people have music bouncing around in our head all the time?

2026-03-16 15:51 UTC

Pretty much most of my life I thought everyone had this (as well as vivid imagination) but now I dont think its as common. Like I can cue up any song in my head and it plays through, all the instruments relatively separated etc. A similar thing happens for writing music, I can write song after song and rarely feel like I “dont have any ideas”. Sometimes I wish that power could actually be utilized…

My brain is more like a skipping record. I get to hear the same part of a song in an endless loop until my brain decides to move on to something else. I fucking swear, dude, there was a period of TWO MONTHS where I had this thing stuck in my head 24/7. Currently, I have had the main theme from Midnight Run stuck in my head for a week, which is a mood booster, so I don’t mind.

Yup, I am always playing with nonsense lyrics and scatting. Idris Elba shows up a lot because it’s a fun to scat.

  • I have a friend who notices when she forgets her adhd meds because the music starts playing. When she told me this it was the first time I realized constant brain music is not a normal thing that everyone has.

There's a reason for the joke that adhd is like having 63 tabs open in your browser and one of them is playing music x)

Unless I'm actively listening to something I've always got music going in my head.

My brain is like a broken jukebox set to shuffle. I randomly get songs that I haven't heard in decades stuck in my head.

  • I'm like this too. I have to focus on the current song to get it to move on or just switch the song entirely.

I never realized the two were connected. It makes sense, though. I don't seperate the instruments but there is almost always something playing in my head. The weird thing is I find it easier to remember all the words to the song than remembering the band who played it.

I have a perpetual mixtape running in my head. It's literally impossible to stop. I know I'm in the depths of depression when the music stops, and I'm climbing back out when it comes back.

Not musical person here, still have too much music going on in the head. Can't even sing them or play them or anything, most of the time cannot even recall them. But they are there... where silence ? [insert monkey meme here]

Yes, there are many albums I don't really even have to turn on to hear. I can play Dark Side of the Moon heartbeat to heartbeat in my head. I often also have other music bouncing around built on my mood, my environment, other sounds I'm hearing, etc.

I've always had background music in my head. It only stopped for a while when I was on vyvanse 70mg..which was way too strong for me. Now that I'm on a 30mg generic med the music came back. Sometimes I can change it but it usually stays playing a couple songs randomly..

  • This is going to trip you out OP but the way you utilize that power is by making music

  • All the time. Presently my brain is bouncing between these two songs, but I don't understand the lyrics to either: Nimalila - Scar zm, MDC Ibague - Monty

  • I'm not even a musician but I can use my brain like an MP3 player or make up my own songs for fun. I've learned to turn it off and on at will and make it play whatever I want.

I haven't heard the song "Cream" by Prince in over 30 years, but my brain DJ just started spinning it as I woke up. It's on loop. Tomorrow will be a different song.

  • I refer to it as my Theme Music. Sit-Com energy. Maybe some stoner movie sometimes. Occasionally a darker, more serious flick. But, yes, 100% of the time, always. Except the first time I took meds. The silence was actually terrifying.

Yeah at work I'm always bobbing my head to music. But I don't know how to play any instrument.
