They mentioned “install an alternative operating system” - which on hardware sold for Windows implies wanting to install Linux. It’s a sadly common thing in ‘enterprise’ however that Linux is looked down upon because businesses don’t trust anything you don’t pay for or doesn’t come with a big name attached and a costly support agreement to match. Which is why this person mentions Mac. Not because they are elitist but because willingness to support Mac is effectively a test case. The person is saying "They will only provide Windows hardware. they won’t let me install Linux on it, and if I ask for a Mac (which also comes from a big and ‘proper’ company by the way!) they won’t even allow that either.

I think this person actually wants to run linux, but they are using Mac as a test case. They mentioned “install an alternative operating system” - which on hardware sold for Windows very much implies Linux. But if Linux is a no, and even macos is a no - which is from a “big and proper organisation” with support agreements and everything - then the company is obviously a lost cause who are dead-set on windows for life for all time.

Meanwhile, the people at Red Hat are left asking, “are we a joke to you?”
