"Over 63 million connections to ChatGPT recorded at University of Glasgow in 2025" https://glasgowguardian.co.uk/2026/02/24/over-63-million-connections-to-chatgpt-recorded-at-university-of-glasgow-in-2025/ I think this is truly sad, as it reflects high adoption by the students. There are about 36,000 students, so this amounts to about 2,000 connections per student per year or about 10 per student per day. #genAI

I ignored the staff in this estimate; Glasgow uni has 6,000 academic staff and 5,000 administrative staff.

@metacosm The order of magnitude remains the same. I already overestimated by counting only 200 days in a year.

@TheBeastOfBaglan My students know perfectly well why.

  • @wim_v12e does Glasgow Uni have mandatory AI subscriptions? The uni I am affiliated with recently introduced MS Copilot which begs you to use it

@wim_v12e I wonder if there might be “best practices” one could inculcate in the use of these things that could actually aid a student’s education. I’m not sure what those might be, or if it is even possible. Things like, phrase your question as “help me evaluate the thesis that….”; always challenge what claims the parrot makes; read it closely looking for flaws in its argument; ask it for clarification of anything that seems ambiguous or unclear… These are things they should be doing with their research material, anyway, of course. (And some of them are lessons I wish I’d figured out in undergrad philosophy classes, especially.)

@wim_v12e Some could be lecturers though, which would be even worse!
