'Previous research has shown adults walking or cycling are 14% more likely to die in a collision when the car involved is an SUV; children are 77% more likely. For children under 9, the risk of fatality is three times higher if struck by an SUV compared with a smaller car. The size and structure of the oversized cars means pedestrians are more likely to be hit in critical organs or at head height and thrown into traffic rather than land on the bonnet of a car if struck.' https://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2026/mar/13/suv-drivers-could-face-extra-charges-for-driving-in-london

@mattpedals@mastodon.online and the damn things rarely get parked with any fidelity, even if they fit within parking space markings.

  • @mattpedals@mastodon.online The thing I would really like to see is a simple rule: In the event of a collision between two vehicles of different weight classes, the larger one is assumed to be at fault unless proven otherwise. That would significantly increase the risk for insurers for big cars. This, in turn, would drive up insurance costs for these vehicles.
