@kallekn@mastodonsweden.se books are not sacred objects of course but consider these two aspects which don't make the entire enterprise smell good:
- the destructive approach is intentional and is not just about speed of scanning but primarily to avoid copyright issues as scanning and destroying the original is less problematic and counts as "fair use" transformation rather than redistribution.
- AI companies are specifically interested in rare books as these aren't in their data corpus already. Rare of course doesn't mean valuable but the chance to lose something forever is far greater. People would hardly object this approach with Harry Potter.
All of this make it feel like poaching.

@shuro @drbjork@mastodon.nu Sure. I'm just objecting to the general idea that books should never be destroyed because thay are "holy" in some way.
