“It’s demoralizing to spend all day around people—ostensibly peers—and hearing them proclaim that they fundamentally don’t respect the thing you have devoted your professional life to.”
This is such a good expression of how I feel about LLM coding agents and “AI” in general. I had started writing almost this exact article, but this is so much better than I would have written it. https://www.scottsmitelli.com/articles/you-dont-have-to/

Though I guess for me it's not even about having "devoted my professional life". I have, but broadly I'm driven by my ever-present desire to understand the next layer down. My trajectory with technology has literally been from the top down. I started with BASIC and now I understand transistors. A higher layer of abstraction, especially one that doesn't even work half the time, is absolutely uninteresting to me. To say nothing of all the problematic externalities! And realizing how few of my peers feel the same way has been quite a shock. If the industry really does become babysitting a Claude subscription, I think it's time to find another line of work.
