Why even concede that machine translation is useful ?
Machine translation is the original useless NLP tool.
It's only ever useful when the result doesn't matter. When anything real is at stake (money, legal conformity, security, health...) you find that you absolutely cannot rely on it and only idiots can say otherwise.
At least a machine-translated novel, unreadable garbage that it would be, would probably not endanger its readers.
Compare that to the instruction manual of a chainsaw or any other number of technical stuff that is the bread and butter of many professional translators (or used to be).
