So my neighbor gave me a Onion like thing few months ago now this unknown flower. I believe Fediverse can tell me what it is. #AskFedi #bloomscrolling #flower #gardening

@Stomata google identifies this as https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hippeastrum Amaryllis are bulbs that you can buy here as a present often even in the supermarket

@Stomata @elduvelle We call it Amarillis and sometimes one of the flowers fits our cat ;)

  • @Stomata a lilly! And the best part about them is that because of the onion like bulb, it'll keep flowering, year after year!

@Stomata Looks like a lily. Not knowing my plants, all I can say for sure is that it's a monocot of some sort, which is a huge clade including both lilies and onion. Assuming your neighbor gave you a bulb, Wikipedia suggests it's probably from the Amaryllidaceae (amaryllis family), Liliaceae (lily family), or possibly a few species from Iridaceae (iris family). Assuming you aren't too far from where this plant is commonly grown, you could submit it to iNaturalist, where you can get ID suggestions from an AI and human IDers can also chime in, though the site is normally more meant for documenting wild specimens. But it's a handy citizen science app that helps you learn the wildlife around you and also documents them for research purposes later! (If you hate making an account, you can also use Seek, which uses iNat's AI database without an account.)
