You *absolutely* can buy a cheap little no-frills car these days. The difference is that we have a minimum level of safety required, so the cars look fancier, but if you want Mitsubishi Mirage you can just go buy one. Honda Fits are basically the modern ‘90s Civic hatchback and Toyota Yarises are right there.
