We know that feeling the entire cottage we're in , almost certainly built circa 1776-7 as it's as canal company worker's cottage, is heated by a single open fire modernised (I would guess, in the 1960s) with a back boiler - the kind that was banned from being installed new in 2005.
Actually, there must be more to it than that as us and our immediate neighbours share a stack that emerges from the apex of the roof. All the others in the terrace emerge ftom the roof on the canal facing side. It seems that at some point in the past our cottages were upgraded with multiple fire places.
