To be fair, aviation was stuck in a patent gridlock for a decade or so after kitty hawk. So you could have kept claiming that the “falling with style” trick was pretty useless for quite a while.

At first, their haters thought, Nah, that would never fly. And when the flight at Kitty Hawk happened, they probably had the 1903 equivalent of the surprised Pikachu face.
