WHO has declared the #Ebola outbreak in DRC and Uganda a Public Health Emergency of International Concern (PHEIC). First time this has been done without consulting an emergency committee. Extraordinary move that speaks to how concerning the facts on the ground look right now. https://www.who.int/news/item/17-05-2026-epidemic-of-ebola-disease-in-the-democratic-republic-of-the-congo-and-uganda-determined-a-public-health-emergency-of-international-concern

There’s the sheer number of suspected cases in the Ituri Province in DRC which is already well above 200 with 80 deaths, the high number of positive cases in tested samples (at least 8 out of 13), the fact that health care workers have been affected and now a confirmed case in Kinshasa. https://www.science.org/content/article/major-outbreak-rare-ebola-virus-species-northern-congo-alarms-scientists

@kakape@mas.to I remember my youth in South Africa, where Ebola was very much respected, not feared as such. It was more a bete noir. Awful disease, which I hope does not make its way to Europe.
