Far-right politicians like Nigel Farage lie about their extreme views constantly.
Trump and Farage also are fast-talking flim-flam salesmen so they encourage some casual supporters to believe that they won't actually implement extreme views. https://www.nytimes.com/2024/07/16/us/politics/trump-latino-voters-deportation.html

Some people who supported Trump actually opposed his most extreme policies at the time. They knew what he said he would do, and they didn't like it. But apparently they hated Joe Biden so much because of inflation (this was a global problem for politicians) that they wanted to get rid of Biden despite their differences w/Trump. This was very naive and foolish. But it was a common view: https://www.wakeuptopolitics.com/p/february-6-2024
