It takes a lot to offend me. I don't follow the modern crowd in that regard. But twice today,, in two different subreddits, I saw this idea of why don't people just drive to do things. In one case, it was online shopping. In another, it was food delivery. Here are my responses to both. The first was a genuine opinion and question, and the second was extremely sarcastic. Hence my difference in tone.

"As someone who is totally blind, I like it because it gives me true independence. I don't have to pay or find someone to drive me to the store on his schedule. I don't have to have someone shop with me. I don't have to rush if said person is in a hurry. I can take the time to read about the products and decide what I want, even finding new things that I hadn't tried before. I don't have to deal with a shopping assistant who switches brands or products on me because he figures I won't notice or it's all the same (it's not). I don't have to deal with inaccessible credit card machines or give my cash or card to someone and hope that I won't be taken advantage of, either by being given the wrong paper bills or by credit card fraud (I can use my phone for the bills but that takes more time). So yes, I am more than happy to wait a day or two for a package to arrive, open the door, and bring it in. And with groceries, at least, many times, I can receive things on the same day."

"Not everyone has the luxury of choosing. I am totally blind. For some odd reason, I am not allowed to drive (I'm sure if I just stuck my cane out the window, I'd be fine), and I have a strange idea that walking on a busy street where such places are often located might possibly get me killed and that it's not worth it just to get a meal. And if I pay for transportation to get me there and back, I'm paying more than the sighted person who can just walk or drive there and get the meal at a decent price. So I'm essentially in the same situation that I would be in if I just ordered and had the food delivered."

@dandylover1@someplace.social Sorry this happened to you. Reddit is filled with arseholes. Always has been. Unfortunately, Lemmy/Piefed have their fair share too.

@dandylover1@someplace.social Both very informative replies (and I hope opened the minds of the commenters you were replying to, even if just a little bit). I think you had just the right level of snark in the second one, nicely done!
