At 8:03 I switch to the second item I'll be singing, the rupak composition "mora piya" in Nayaki Kanada. While both of these Jaipur-style khyals have melismatic mukhdas, they differ extremely in other ways. Where the Bihagada piece has a sustained flow which even includes the pauses in its sweeping forward motion, the Nayaki Kanada khyal feels dramatic, eventful, like watching a swordfight.

I go over text variations, building short bol-bant strings; the intense syllabification of these lyrics makes the resolution at the mukhda very dramatic. As my familiarity with the material deepens, I'm can execute more variations on the mukhda itself, including simple syllabic clusters with no melismata at all. Such substitution usually unfolds in the direction of added complexity... 6/
