My partner and I do everything with another couple who are our best friends. Last February, the better half of that couple was diagnosed with stage four undifferentiated abdominal cancer. They would not give her a time frame. Well, that time frame is now. She went into hospice the end of last month. Today she decided it was time for palliative sedation. We got the message about 30 minutes before I could break for lunch. When I got down stairs to discuss the news with my partner, she was scrubbing storage containers with a vengeance. Me: what are you doing? Her: … *sniffle* … rage cleaning out the refrigerator. Me: that’s definitely the last thing I expected. And we laughed, if somewhat forlornly. Yes, there is tragedy. But there is also love. Be kind to one another. Laugh together. There is enough sadness in the world.
