I recently heard that only the top 10%, by wealth, of US adults are doing essentially all of the consumption of non essential goods. Historically I think there were way more people with income free for modest luxuries like wine. I don't know what the right amount of wine would be but I think part of the contraction in purchasing can be attributed to greater wealth inequality vs in decades past.
