RE: https://mastodon.online/@bmk/116153355079084594 Thugs can hold power only because of fear. It doesn't matter whether people fear them, fear enemies, or fear for their own future or lives. Strong fear evokes in humans deep-seated mechanisms that make us approve violence more easily, seek safety through violent collective actions, and ultimately, grant authority to thugs. Authoritarians routinely use conflicts and wars to strengthen their grip on power. This is the root cause of wars, imo.
