Yeah I’m not actually against marvel quips, though I definitely feel they became detrimental to the writing style of their films over time. When I complain about it, I’m really complaining about interruptions where they aren’t warranted and don’t contribute to the narrative. A good quip isn’t just funny- it can contribute to audience understanding, help with pacing, and fits naturally into the narrative. A bad quip interrupts the narrative for no reason other than to interrupt. I don’t really have a good example for this, it’s more of a ‘know it when you see it’ situation. It was definitely better in the early marvel films. As much as I love witty characters like Spider-Man, not everyone needs to be comic relief and sometimes it just doesn’t jibe with the story being told.
