@snapsjaw IRC, Internet Relay Chat, is probably the oldest chat protocol still in use. It also is missing several features that we take for granted now, like server-side message history and file attachments. Notably, IRC did not always have a concept of "accounts." you could just join as a guest and change your name whenever you want. The ability to "reserve" a username was something that people added later using a bot called NickServ, sort of like how pluralkit is a bot for discord.
