Let's say that you're a union negotiator. You agree to waive, say, a $5/hour wage increase in return for a more generous healthcare package, and sign a 5-year contract.
2 years into the contract, M4A goes into effect. Suddenly you're getting fully comprehensive healthcare...

...and you're saving, say, $2,500/yr in premiums/etc while your taxes go up $2,000. On paper you're coming out $500/yr ahead, hooray! ...except that you also gave up a $10,000/yr pay raise in return for the insurance which is now moot. In your head, you aren't saving $500, you *lost* $10,000.
