Your 2nd paragraph sounds just like GOG ! I tend whenever possible to get my games from GOG than Steam.

I do like GOG, but it’s not an alternative, more an addendum. It is mostly for old games re-optimized/made playable for modern hardware. New games sometimes come out there, but not with any regularity.
