I was provoked, too. For 60 years, I have been subject to the incessant aural demands and expectations of people who think their thoughts are more important than my own. “Take out your earphones so you are ready listen to me whenever a random thought spills from my gilded lips,” is the auditory equivalent of “Smile! I’ve decided to observe you for a few minutes so I want you more pleasant to look at.”
Noise-cancelling headphones have done more for my sanity in public places than all the shelf-help books, therapy, mindfulness, and breathing exercises I could ever subject myself to.
Is it satire? Is it clickbait? Doesn’t matter. I add my tiny voice to the growing roar of outrage. Now, where did I put my earphones? It’s getting loud in here.
