The day before yesterday, I was coming out of the sea, tired of playing in waves less than 3 feet high, when a woman and a little girl were waiting for me.
“Good morning, I’m B and this is M, my daughter. Sorry to bother you, but the little one dragged me all the way out here because she has a favour to ask of you.”
“I want you to teach me to surf,” said the girl, who looked about nine years old.
After a scolding from her mum, she corrected herself: “Please, I’d like you to teach me to surf.”
The woman rolled her eyes, but I laughed.
“My dear, I’m not a surf instructor. There’s a surf school right here on this beach, and further north there’s a surf academy just for girls,” I replied.
“I don’t want to go to a surf school, I want you to teach me to surf. Please.”
“Darling, next week I’m going back to work and I won’t be able to be on the beach on week days.”
“But you can on the weekends, can’t you? Please.”
“Stop pestering her. She’s already explained she can’t,” said her mom.
“She seems to know exactly what she wants,” I remarked under my breath.
“Oh, you’ve no idea how much!”
The girl reminded me of myself at her age, and I relented. “All right, tomorrow at half past four. And I’ll try to be here on the next few weekends too. I won’t be able to at the end of August.”
“I knew you’d understand. I’ve been watching a lot, and the lads don’t surf like you do.”
Yesterday I went to see her and she completely charmed me. Suddenly I began to realize why women want to have children.
But the #story is much more compelling than I’ve set out here. Be sure to read it in my #newbook of #shortstories.

@aliceamour@beige.party You have made an impression. In fact, you have made an impression on each other. (... and, maybe, you have found an alternative career option as a surf instructor! 😁)
