Security, terrorism and migration are the magic words used by the reactionary political right all around the world. You keep repeating them like a mantra, and they can justify everything. Forced repatriations, extra-judicial arrests, suspensions of international treaties, of the rule of law, of freedom of movement, of freedom of speech. Fascists don’t even have to mention exactly why such extreme measures are required. A fascist can just say that it’s for “security reasons”, and to defend the country from “terroristic threats” that stem from immigration, and they have carte blanche to dismantle democratic institutions however they please. Until the emergency becomes the norm. Until the police state replaces whatever is left of democratic institutions. And I blame the political left too for this. Fascists can go so far only because they are not afraid of the consequences. Because nobody calls them accountable. Because they never have a reason to be afraid for their lives, even though they impose those fears on many. A shy and insipid political left has embraced nonviolence even against the worst fascist scum. The political left that has forgotten that their grandparents defeated fascism by picking up the rifles and getting their hands dirty with political assassinations. The political left has alienated its own base because it can no longer channel their outrage against the bullying and contradictions of fascisms. The political left believes that they can defeat those who don’t believe in the democratic discourse by using the tools of the democratic discourse rather than violence.
