  Led Zeppelin I was released in 1969. The iconic band's iconic cover depicts the infamous Hindenburg disaster (1936), "one of the most famous disasters in aviation history." The disaster killed 36 people. 32 years ago was just 1994. Led Zeppelin was making light of a famous event in living memory. A possible reason they used this cover is all of the members of the band were born 10ish years after the disaster. They recorded and released their smash-hit album when they were in their mid-20s. The rock-and-roll musicians were probably not too interested in social norms either. If Led Zeppelin I were released today, it might have a photo of TWA Flight 800 (1996), a gruesome midair explosion that killed 230 people. Yet not many disasters have captured the public imagination the way the Hindenburg did. A better comparison may be Chernobyl (1986) - farther back in time, but larger in our minds.
