Cassidy, whom everybody had penciled in as the last adult in the room, announced Friday he was a yes — days after Blanche quietly rescinded a $1.776 billion "anti-weaponization" fund pointed at Trump allies and January 6 defendants. A number priced like a novelty flag magnet, because these people cannot resist a bit even while handing out public money.

Here's what they had on the table instead. Nonfarm payrolls fell by 23,000 in July against a forecast of an 83,000 gain. The prior two months revised down by a combined 103,000. Participation at 61.4%, lowest in more than five years. The unemployment rate ticked down mostly because people stopped looking. 1.8 million people jobless twenty-seven weeks or longer. That's a quarter of everyone unemployed. They stayed up past four in the morning for the lawyer, and went home for the groceries. 3/4
