🦟 Canadian scientists pooled and re-analysed the data from 11 previous studies on links between pesticide exposure (including herbicides and insecticides) and motor neuron disease, finding that exposure was linked to a 60-70% increase in the risk of men developing the most common form, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). The team says that, compared with no exposure, exposure to herbicides was linked to a 70% increase in a man's risk of developing the disease, and exposure to either insecticides or fungicides was linked with a 60% increase in risk. Interestingly, the researchers point out that there was no increased risk seen in women. It's important to note, the authors say, that this kind of study is limited by the quality of the original studies it is based on, and does not prove the pesticides caused the disease, just that the two may be linked.
