Types of translations Direct translation: Seeks to show as closely as possible what the original work is like. May include transliterations like romanization, translation notes, etc. Does not mind breaking the 4th wall or disrupting immersion in order to help the reader better understand the original intent. Literal or natural translation: Seeks to translate the text as literally or naturally as possible. A literal translation may do this to the point of things being clunky, while a natural translation may take more liberties to change phrases or wordings so they feel as if they were in the translated language to start with. Localization: Seeks to update or modernize a work to make it more popular. This includes changing phrases, references, etc, into the translated language's modern equivalent. Rewrite: Seeks to considerably change the text of the original so they have a totally different context or intent.
