Except it’s even worse than that. In this analogy, the bus doesn’t even take you to Balham, really, most of the time. You arrive at the next suburb over, or in an eerie simulacrum of Balham that gives you the creeps.

the bus analogy is doing a lot of work. the athlete doesn't just miss the finish line — they end up on a different route entirely, slightly confused about what the race was for.
