@wipfli@mastodon.social .../ Then you count up from 0+1 in 0384 until you get to 2 (as the fourth-before-last digit of 2173) and write down 1 as the fourth-before-last digit of your result which now reads 1789. Never heard of the borrowing method. But looking at your screenshot, it is the same only they other way around - we add to the number being subtracted, they subtract from the number from which you want to substract.
