In fact, the whole exercise was a somewhat somber reflection of nature and state of the Fediverse: at least half of the accounts I was following are people who aren't here any more. Most of those for well over a year.
Around when I hit 5,000, somebody made a comment about what it must be like to have so many followers on Mastodon. I thought (but did not say), "Actually, it feels a lot like having 2,000 followers did.
Turns out there was a reason for that.

@maxleibman@beige.party I did a similar thing when I reached 4k and then was down to 2k, and since then I already remove followers when I can see they're not really here or interested... so I keep hovering around the 2k and that's just fine :,D
