SCREAMING TREES Even If And Especially When 2024 U.S. reissue Their second album overall, but their FIRST for SST Records. If all you know is the latter day Screaming Trees albums from the #90s (Sweet Oblivion, Dust), then hearing the SST material comes as quite a shock. This is a far more raw and PSYCHEDELIC brand of Trees. It’s rough, garage-y, a bit unrefined, and legendary frontman Mark Lanegan’s signature deep and weathered vocal is not there yet. It was THESE kinds of records that made them well-known heroes in the underground. The band went through their paces for years honing their craft, and when “Seattle/Grunge Mania” happened six years later, they already had FIVE records under their belt. This album’s opener “Transfiguration” is one of my all time favorite Trees tunes. It’s so gnarly and in your face.
