another heiroglyphic problem. Notepad.exe seems to have trouble telling that the UTF-8 heiroglyphics are not UTF-16 CJK ideographs

prepending a UTF-8 BOM would actually be mostly harmless though, it's invisible and not likely to be copyable. but maybe we can make it so the executable still works with the missing BOM. it will just change languages. like magic.
