So it looks like another artist whose work I admired, at least in that one movie that I’m most familiar with, has turned out to be a monster.
Why does this keep happening? It’s bad enough when openly terrible people — asshole tech bros, bigoted politicians — are also revealed to be groomers and abusers. But when it’s artists whose work touches our souls and inspires us to be kinder and braver and more deeply feeling, it’s a special kind of betrayal.

I totally get that his music moved millions, that he’s fought for worthy causes, that he’s a cultural icon. But we always seem to give grace to men like this and downplay their abuses because of the “larger context” of their “contributions” to society. We say: “Yes, he abused women BUT his music was so important to the world.” “Yes, he targeted vulnerable kids BUT his art and advocacy were so inspiring and influential.” Men like him get to be “complicated” — and ultimately forgiven. 2/4
