The initial story here starts when Australian cops tasered a 95yo grand mother named Clare Nowland. She walked slowly with a walker while holding a knife. Cops decided she was a threat and used a taser on her. She fell and died. When the dust settled police officer Kristian White was stuck with the reality that he had killed a family's grandmother. Accountability was demanded from the cops and a trial was held. https://www.abc.net.au/news/2024-11-18/police-taser-trial-kristian-white-grandmother-clare-nowland-day6/104607454 #ClareNowland #KristianWhite

Ultimately the cops escaped serious accountability after largely using to my understanding a defense suggesting that Axon's taser products and others are unsafe in general practice. For people like Clare Nowland's family this shifting of responsibility due to technology is unfair. None the less this lead many Australians interested in police accountability into the direction of understanding police technology more deeply. https://www.theguardian.com/australia-news/2025/mar/28/former-nsw-police-officer-kristian-white-sentenced-shooting-95-year-old-clare-nowland-ntwnfb #ClareNowland
