When I briefly helped with Microsoft :: David Cutler :: David Hanson :: C++ MIPS code generator, I was introduced to the idea of compiling the compiler with the compiler etc. in order to double check that it was a fixed point, as an effective sanity check that all was well before more detailed testing. It worked out brilliantly for that purpose (i.e. it immediately found bugs I introduced, oops).
