Polishing leather shoes was once an expected ritual before presenting yourself at a job interview, a church gathering or a date with a girl who had suspicious parents. For most people leather shoes are a thing of the past, but I've worn them since childhood and they just feel right. So today I brought out the shoe polish, scoured the house for a long unused but treasured horsehair shoe brush and sat down with an old rag to apply shoe polish to a well worn but still sturdy pair of Merrill leather shoes. I understand that people are busy and don't have time for this chore. But my mother, who is alive only in my mind, smiled on me for taking the time to do it.
