The song “Human Nature” was first written and composed by Steve Porcaro, a keyboardist for the band Toto. He created the melody and the chorus in 1982, inspired by a conversation with his young daughter after a playground incident. Although Porcaro was a member of Toto, the song did not originally appear on any Toto album. The band passed on recording it, preferring more stadium-rock-oriented material at the time. The demo accidentally reached producer Quincy Jones on the B-side of a cassette tape meant for other songs, leading to its selection for Michael Jackson's album Thriller. Lyricist John Bettis was later brought in by producer Quincy Jones to rewrite the verses, as Porcaro’s original lyrics were deemed incomplete yet Porcaro’s chorus remained unchanged. It was released as the fifth single from his sixth solo album, Thriller, on July 3, 1983. While Steve Porcaro and other members of Toto; including David Paich & Steve Lukather, played the synthesizers and instruments on the track, Michael Jackson was the sole vocalist and the face of the recording. "Human Nature" has been interpreted by many artists across various genres with an gracious instrumental version by Miles Davis in 1985, which Steve Porcaro cited as a personal highlight given his father's admiration for Davis.
