@petergleick@fediscience.org I'm reminded, ironically, of the Lord of the Rings. Bilbo's mithril shirt is stated as having a worth greater than the value of the Shire and everything in it, and there's canonically one person in Middle-Earth who loves and covets mithril above all else. If you guessed the Dark Lord, you'd be right. When people say these billionaires want to play out the worst parts of that fantasy, they're more on the nose than they might think.
