They were originally designed for manual telephone exchanges where switchboard operators would insert them to connect a call, and thugs they were designed to handle hundreds of thousands of insert/disconnect cycles. The worst connector is micro-USB. You can blkame Nokia for that one, it was rammed through USB-IF with claims of improved robustness over mini-USB that were obvious nonsense.
