Baby cows are ripped away from their mothers (and their milk) too early, so humans can drink the rich cow milk that is meant for the calf. But that's okay, because most calfs will be slaughtered and sold as meat anyway.
And yes. It's the industry that keeps the milk and meat myth alive. (But this is my interpretation, not that of Kevin V.)

@paulk@writing.exchange @vegan_horizon@veganism.social okay, so specifically it's the veal and the time away from mom? so yes, it's the scale issue. small farms (under a few dozen head of cattle for example, though some exceptions larger and smaller may persist etc) don't need to do that, often don't do that, indeed have personal relationships with their animals that preclude doing that, etc.
