Theoretically, the MIDI pickup only converts the measurable tension (for each string) into a MIDI event, so if there's no tension (i.e. no note being played), it should not produce anything. But in practice, it often misfires on something (most typically an overtone). So there's a need to do a lot of semi-automatic (and indeed manual) data cleaning after each session :-)
