The first US income tax was constructed "to shift ownership of the American government away from the bankers who had previously provided Treasury funds, to the American people." according to @hc_richardson@beta.mstdn.cf . She goes on from there to Reagan, but I want to point out that all that debt the Republicans have incurred have put the bankers right back in control. The best reason I can think of to tax the rich and pay down the debt is to get the banks off this gravy train.
